Product Description
Fevered notes scribbled on napkins after first dates. Titillating text messages. It's-not-you-it's-me relationship-enders. In Other People’s Love Letters, Bill Shapiro has searched America’s attics, closets, and cigar boxes and found actual letters–unflinchingly honest missives full of lust, provocation, guilt, and vulnerability–written only for a lover’s eyes. Modern love, of course, is not all bliss, and in these pages you’ll find the full range of a relationship, with its whispered promises as well as its heartache. But what at first appears to be a deliciously voyeuristic peek into other people’s most passionate moments, will ultimately reawaken your own desires and tenderness…because when you read these letters, you’ll find the heart you’re looking into is actually your own.

• "i think UR great. wanna have wine & Tequila again sometime?"

• "I can't believe you're real, and I think about you constantly in some way or the other all day. I haven't given the finger to anyone driving since I met you."

• "With you I learned how to fight cleaner, how to talk things out better, and how to make a strong loving family out of nothing. These are priceless gifts that I will carry with me the rest of my life. One more thing you did for me: you left, and I had to get through it."

• "P.S. I look forward to your letters too much to call. Also, where do you stand on chains?"

5 out of 5 stars Intimate Correspondence   January 1, 2009
In "Other People's Love Letters" Bill Shapiro presents 150 letters that are pretty interesting to read. He requested letters from everyone he knew and they in turn did the same. Some of the letters are about divorce and a few are especially honest about breaking up. However most of the letters seem pretty mild and could be read by anyone without offence. Every letter in this collection was printed with permission from its writer or the closest living relative. One typed letter was from 1939 and didn't really seem like a love letter to me. There is one letter that is pretty impressive and states all the reasons a person is loved - it shows a lot of creativity. The letters about divorce and missed opportunities are a little sad but most of the people have a good attitude about what is happening. One letter reveals that a couple is writing 50 e-mails a day and that it is becoming overwhelming. The writer says: "...except for your insanity, you are one of the coolest, funniest people I know." Some of the handwritten letters are difficult to read. The most interesting letters were the ones where a response was also included. A few people seemed to be involved in long-distance relationships. For the most part, these letters are fun to read and they are not likely to offend. I think some people who reviewed this book were reading a different book because I didn't find anything too erotic in these letters.

THE PRIVACY OF OTHERS IS ALWAYS INTERESTING TO OTHER PEOPLE. IT'S LIKE A LOOK INTO SOMEONE ELSES SOUL.

This is not really a collection of love letters at all. Not very romantic, and not even letters. It's mostly just a bunch of sex emails and scribbled notes. More confusing than amusing. Nothing special

2 out of 5 stars Boring, not all even love letters.   May 21, 2008

My husband Wiley writes waaaayyyy better love letters than this. Many are not even "love letters" they are just stupid, poorly written notes. Save your time and money.

I personally was not a fan of this book. I was excited to get it because I thought it may be interesting. While there were a couple cute letters, I particularly did not feel it was worth the money, and was boring.
