Disappointed November 30, 2008 I'm disappointed. I read over reviews for a number of similar study guides and settled on Schaum's Outline of College Algebra in hopes of quickly reviewing before a placement test I need to take. While the book covers a lot, and I do mean a lot, of different topics, there are a lot, and I do mean a lot, of typos and inconsistencies in the set up of the text chapter to chapter. The typos in the steps to solving a problem are the worst. And sometimes, in the "Supplementary Problems" section, instead of leaving all of the answers to the end, they put them right next the the questions. Annoying. So far, I've skipped one chapter all together because the text made absolutly no sense. Maybe they're just teaching things differently these days (I doubt it). Overall, I'm disappointed and will try to find another study guide asap.
complicated October 28, 2008 Seems a lil complicated. I think I should have ordered one for regular algebra first!
A good choice for a refresher or supplement, unsuitable as a main text for the algebra novice April 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
College algebra, often taught in high schools so the name is a misnomer, is a course that nearly all students must get through. The abstractions of replacing numbers by letters and then rearranging them are thought processes that some find easy and others find very hard. Yet, it is a mental exercise that serves you well, it prepares the mind for problem-solving situations that occur throughout life. This book, a collection of worked exercises in what is called college algebra, starts at the very beginning and in short increments works through all of the topics found in college algebra courses. Problems are solved in several ways, each step presented in detail. Like all the other Schaum's books, this book is an excellent choice for a quick review of the material. People who want to learn college algebra generally will not be able to use it as a text. For them, the best use is as something to supplement their main text or manner of learning.
An excellent book fortextbook support June 25, 2007 I bought this book to bolster my knowledge of Algebra concepts while taking precalculus courses at my local college. I found it to be very supportive and supplements the textbook that was assigned to my class.
