Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
id Software's Quake II departs radically from the company's trademark linear "find-two-keys-and-two-doors" game structure. In the sequel, larger missions require players to maneuver between levels, often returning to previously explored areas to complete key tasks. Unfortunately, the upshot is that the chances of becoming lost, frustrated, or bewildered are much higher than before. To ensure that you stay on the right path and complete your critical mission to destroy the Strogg, you might want some help from a strategy guide.

Quake II: Authorized Strategy Guide walks you through every mission in Quake II and includes valuable secrets and hidden levels. Maps and notated screen shots fill each chapter, so you'll have no trouble finding your way from level to level and back again. All of the maps are reprinted at the end of the book in full color for quick reference. An appendix covers some multiplayer information, including how to join, start, or customize a network game. There's also some basic strategic advice, guidance on how to use all of the weapons for a deathmatch, an extremely brief rundown of console commands, and a slightly premature comparison of multiplayer Quake II to its predecessor. If you're brand new to online play, this material is really only enough to get your feet wet. Thankfully, the guide also provides URLs for the four best sources of Quake information on the Web, so the uninitiated will be able to locate further advice from the vast Quake community before competing.

Product Description
An overview of each mission, along with step-by-step instructions for getting through them in one piece. A Quake II guide without good maps is no help at all multi-layered leveltwice! Chart your path with 3D maps featuring call-outs that correspond to the Mission Briefings. Full-color section of the book repeats every map to provide unparalleled detail! Plus, a profile of the Alien Forces, descriptions of Weapons & Military Supplies, and strategies for Multiplayer Quake II!

4 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this one.   June 23, 1999

The maps and technical input was very well put. I enjoyed going back and catching secrets I had missed. Although, I don't agree with all the strategy tips and firmly believe people should try their own strategy first, it was a nice follow-up guide. I think Mr. Wessel did an excellent job, but left out the main reason I bought the book. Their are no tittle key references. I really needed some advice in that area and I didn't find any. Overall the book was very in depth, but lacked shortcuts. I enjoyed it thouroghly none the less. Thanks for the book. - Jake

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not amazing   April 10, 1999

A fairly good guide with some nice pics and maps. But in retrospect, who would want to buy a walkthrough for QUAKE II anyway ?
