 Using SharePoint to manage marketing projects December 19, 2008
I read this book from a marketing manager's perspective because I believe most marketing failures can be traced back to failures of project management.
I wanted to see how SharePoint could be used to quickly manage marketing projects and help my clients avoid marketing project failure. Many people don't know that they probably already have SharePoint running somewhere within their organization. When budgets are tight, leveraging technology that you already have can help stretch a strained budget.
A marketing manager with any of the following problems should probably read this book:
*No standardized systems for integrating project goals
*Inefficient document management
*Lack of appropriate tools to facilitate team collaboration
*Inability to report accurate and timely status of the project
*Not achieving organizational strategic goals
Getting a handle on how to fix just one of these five issues makes this a good investment. Even better that the book walks you thru everything you need to know to set-up SharePoint as a project management tool.

This book gets right down to what you NEED to know to manage a projet team using SharePoint. Prior to reading it, I picked-up a few other SharePoint books and I found myself merely overwhelmed, and unsure, as to how I could use the plethora of features described. This book easily translates to practical application. The workshops are easy to follow and duplicate in a real-world environment. If you are a project manager and want to know how this tool can benefit you, start here!
Excellent, balanced introduction to the use of SharePoint for project management December 9, 2008
Dux does a great job of showing how project tracking can be made simpler using SharePoint. This is NOT primarily a book about SharePoint technology, but about how day-to-day project tracking and communication can be made simpler and more effective using various features of SharePoint. Dux keeps the tone casual and makes the technology very accessible for those new to either SharePoint or project management.
The only "Getting up and going"-book you'll need December 4, 2008
I received the book this Monday morning. And had read it through by Tuesday evening... It is brilliant! Crisp clear instruction, a great balance between explaining background and step-by-step showing how to do it. The very personal language also makes it easy to read and fun.
What I think I like best is the down to earth "I have done this myself" approach. What I mean is, one can really relate to the reasoning and it is based on reality not on fancy theory on how things should be witch makes it very trustworthy. Anyone can start using it straight away.
I didn't work my way through each and every exercise but a lot of them and based on my experience of SharePoint the rest looks similarly easy to complete. It'll be the x-mas gift from my company to a number of key customers and contacts.

If, like me, you're new to SharePoint and have just been asked to create a SharePoint PMIS then you couldn't get much better than this book. I do take on board some of the other comments from reviewers who felt they wanted more - but that's missing the point a bit. This book does a fantastic job of ensuring someone like me has the foundation knowledge, firmly based in project management context, to build and manage a PMIS.
Managing a successful project and building a good SharePoint PMIS both have to start with well laid foundations. This book delivers exactly that.
Also, for those people seeking more, Dux does a great job in his blogs and on the book's site of answering queries and "collaborating" with other SharePoint users.
