Good OpenDoc primer, but lacks details that programmers need June 21, 1997

The book quickly covers most aspects of OpenDoc. The book can be used as a primer before jumping into the OpenDoc programmer's reference manual, but nothing more. As I read the book, the most intriguing details were always referred to as being beyond the scope of the text; the reader is constantly being referred to the online reference manual. A beta version of the OpenDoc toolkit and reference manual is included. The toolkit is an easy install, and I was running the docshell the first day and playing around with some included parts. The reference manual, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Some of the sections (e.g. Scripting) are incomplete. An up-to-date version of the reference manuals and toolkit are available on the web. The book shows code examples of cross-platform development for OS/2 and Win95, but is slightly OS/2 biased. For example, some of the code examples and chapters are OS/2 only, and the CD includes additional OS/2-only parts. However, the Win95/WinNT version of these parts are now available on the web. Since the book remains at an overview level, it's an easy read. It took roughly two days to read cover-to-cover. If you want a book that teaches you the OpenDoc terminology and prepares you before diving into the reference manual, then this is the book for you. If you want a book that takes you through part development step-by-step or gives you in-depth coverage of any OpenDoc area, then you should look elsewhere.
