Good reference book, but it's time for next edition! April 4, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is one of the very good reference books for UMTS as a starter. The history, UTRAN, Core network has been described very well. But the books seems to be more focussed on R99 architecture, It's almost time to have an updated edition giving more stress on the Distributed switch architecture, Soft switch, IP Multimedia subsystem etc.
There needs to be detailed chapter on HSDPA.
The best book on UMTS networks. August 14, 2002 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This books is currently the best book on UMTS network. It covers both UTRAN and core network layout very well. The other parts on theory, WCDMA, services, terminals and protocols are also very good. The book has been very well organised. There are many figures in the book which are clear and helpful to understand. If you need only one book on UMTS, this is the one. There are many books in the market on 3G and UMTS but this one is the one explaining how it works in practical rather than just theory only. It is European centric also. Warmly recommended.

It's a great book. The chapters explain and develop the UTRAN and CN concepts defined in the 3GPP specifications. Could be great if the chapter dedicated to UMTS Services its more detailed.

Very easy reading. Good use of diagrams to illustrate concepts discussed. Covered more then I anticipated on the CN and UTRAN. Typically, focus is emphasized on the WCDMA but this book has balance. The only thing that bothers me is the continual type error with the letter z being replaced by s everywhere in the book.
