Editorial Reviews:

Book Description
A hands-on programming guide for the most active wireless application environment--cell phones and pagers
In his previous book, Java 2 Micro Edition (0-471-39065-8), Eric Giguere showed why Sun's J2ME is fast becoming the dominant language for all handheld devices. In this new book, the Ortiz-Giguere team explains how to use the J2ME Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) to write Java applications for wireless devices like cell phones and two-way pagers as well as more powerful devices like the Palm VII. The authors begin with a basic tutorial on J2ME, then quickly move on to explain how to use MIDP to write full-featured applications for cell phones and pagers. Using real case studies and code, they walk developers through all the necessary topics, including GUIs, client/server and peer-to-peer communications, HTTP, XML, databases, WAP, security issues, MIDP and J2EE in the Enterprise and much more.

4 out of 5 stars excellent introduction   November 14, 2002

This book has been great for me; it provided the right level of detail when I first started working with J2ME and covered all the main areas that I needed to delve into. One year later, I still dip into the book and find useful info there. I like the way it's written - clear, concise, not a boring read. I heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book on MIDP   May 13, 2002

It's the best book I read about MIDP. It covers all the areas I need to learn for J2ME programming, i.e. security, XML parser, etc. There are plenty code samples you can use as the base of your application.

5 out of 5 stars Sure there's a website   February 27, 2002

Let me correct an error in that last review so that it doesn't lead others astray. There is indeed a web site for the book where you can download the source for the examples. It's mentioned on page XX of the introduction, in the section entitled "Companion Web Site". The address given on the page sends you to the Wiley web site, which then redirects you automatically to j2medeveloper(dot)com. The URL is also mentioned twice on the back cover of the book. And several times throughout the book.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother   February 23, 2002

Disappointing. I'd expect much more from a book that is a "developers guide". For example, the programs have to be typed in, there is no cd or website! The explanations were too brief and skim over topics. Keep looking if you are in need of a good j2me book.

4 out of 5 stars This book is a great start   February 11, 2002

I was very happy with the content covered in the book. I don't like books that include hard copy of lots of free documentation just to pump up the page count. The examples were good and covered the main differences between J2ME and J2SE. The balance of descriptive text versus example code was good, but I wouldn't have minded seeing a few more code samples.
