Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
For introductory courses in Visual Basic Programming, offered in departments of Information Technology, Computer Science or Business. Merging the concept of a lab manual with that of a conventional textbook, the Deitels have crafted an innovative approach that enables students to learn programming while having a mentor-like book by their side. This best-seller blends the Deitel signature Live-Code Approach with their Application-Driven methodology. Students learn programming and Visual Basic by working through a set of applications. Each tutorial builds upon previously learned concepts while learning new ones, An abundance of self assessment exercises are available at the end of most chapters to reinforce key ideas. This approach makes it possible to cover a wealth of programming constructs within the Visual Basic 2008 environment.Key topics include Language Integrated Query (LINQ), Visual Programming, Framework Class Library (FCL), Controls (Buttons, TextBoxes, ListBoxes, Timers, ComboBoxes, RadioButtons, Menus, Dialogs), Event Handling, Debugger, Algorithms, Control Structures, Methods, Random-Number Generation, Arrays, Classes, Objects, Collections, Mouse & Keyboard Event Handling, Strings, Files, Database, Graphics, Multimedia, GUI Design and Web applications. Deitel accomplishes this by making highly technical topics as simple as possible. The Third Edition is fully updated for Visual Studio 2008, Visual Basic 2008 and .NET 3.5.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great high level overview of Visual Basic 2008   October 29, 2008
I am an experienced Visual Basic .Net programmer, and I purchased this book to review the new features in Visual Basic .NET 2008.

The book provided a great overview of new technologies such as LINQ, WPF/ XAML, and Silverlight. The book provides 32 examples with very detailed line-by line explanations that are valuable for learning.

After reading the book, I wish I had purchased Deitel's other Visual Basic 2008 because I would like more detail some Visual Basic 2008 features. I would HIGHLY recommend this book for someone who wants to get their feet wet and quickly write VB programs. For more explanation and fundamentals, I would recommend Deitel's other Visual Basic 2008 book.

5 out of 5 stars An easy and fun way to learn Visual Basic 2008   September 17, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This is one of the easiest and most helpful book for anyone to learn Visual Basic 2008. It is tutorial driven with complete working code supplied on the CD packaged with the book. The IDE controls and Visual Basic structures are introduced gradually in a piecemeal and painless fashion so that the reader is not overwhelmed by a flood of new concepts and programming structures. The reader test-drives a small application at the beginning of each chapter and then builds up the application with helpful, easy-to-follow steps. You are very unlikely to find any easier book than this one for Visual Basic 2008. Once you have gone through this beginners' book, you might like to round out your mastery of Visual Basic 2008 with its more complete cousin Visual Basic 2008: How To Program. Both books are strongly recommended for anyone learning Visual Basic 2008.
