Promise Unfulfilled September 13, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Hullfish and Fowler offer a lot of good information in their book "Avid Xpress Pro Editing Workshop", but they also squeeze in far too many attempts to make the book "entertaining". Instead of teaching you in some kind of happy-go-lucky way, their jokes, quips and quirks sidetrack and ultimately frustrate you. And while you get the sense that these guys are terrifically experienced editors with lots of tricks up their sleeves, you don't perform those tricks yourself because the DVD-ROM in the back of the book doesn't include much of a tutorial at all, just some groovy little settings that you can copy.
Unfortunately, the book is not organized as a quick reference, nor is it designed as a true "workshop"--as the title advertises. In fact, the only real work you do is wading through black and white text while you seek out those instructive hands-on lessons that never quite materialize.
While the authors offer loads of terrific information, the book doesn't fulfill the title's promise.
Worth the price the first day February 24, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great book for the way I learn. I don't like reading from front to back and with AVID being my new editing platform, I needed a book that would allow me to jump to what I was interested in at the time. Hullfish's book allows me to find answers that are not obvious in the regular 'help' menus of the software. This book paid for itself within 1 day after it arrived.
