Organizing contents and expressing facts and concepts August 28, 2001 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I'm used to be a heavy buyer of Technology related books, and I shops for books everyweek. Usually, I will run through a book quickly before making decision on buying the book. This title caught me eyes when I was shopping for J2ME books, and it happened to be one of the earliest J2ME books in a local book store. Without thinking and browsing through the book, and I bought it. The author has won Motorola award and may be very good in practising in the J2ME field. However, they are poor in expressing and representing it. The organization of the contents are poorly done, looks like writing notes while they are reading a book or technical specification. I'm not denying their development skills in J2ME, but the author needs to have skills in organizing contents and expressing facts and concepts.
Good Book for Java Developer to Learn J2ME Technology August 21, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are a experienced Java Developer, this book surely help you to develop your own J2ME project even you have no idea on J2ME is. Although this released a bit early so that it has not cover the MIDP for Palm OS. But with the exmaple insides, I think you should hand over J2ME smoothly within a month
Sloppy in the Details August 19, 2001 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
An otherwise decent book rendered completly frustrating by lack of attention to deatails. For a seasoned programmer, the most difficult thing about learning a new technology is the environment issues. This book fails to point out that key J2ME zip and jar files need to go into your classpath before the examples work. The reason you buy a book like this is to not have to learn this kind of detail on your own. Unfortunately, this book ignores many such details.
Great Reference Book July 30, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Great reference book with good examples and information on J2ME programming. The UI, RMS, and networking material is very useful. I refer to the book often and find the detailed information extremely useful and comprehensive. I would recommend it for any serious J2ME developer.
A Must-Have Wireless J2ME Book For Both Beginner And Expert July 10, 2001 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This book provides a comprehensive and in-depth study on the next-generation wireless programming with J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition). The authors introduce this cutting-edge wireless technology with superb knowledge and professional insight. Chapters are well structured, tightly connected and rich in practical sample codes, that simply makes understanding highly effective.Besides covering all the major J2ME topics, such as CLDC(Connected Limited Device Configuration) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), this book also explains, in great details, other wireless developments, including "Using XML in Wireless Applications" (Chapter 10) and "NTT DoCoMo's Java for i-Mode in Japan" (Appendix D). Knowing these current industry trends would greatly empower readers with added advantages in this competitive wireless market. Being the first-prize winner in the 2000 Motorola J2ME Virtual Developer Contest, Yu Feng, one of the authors, dedicates the entire Chapter 9 for his award-winning m-commerce application. This recognition on his quality wireless production gives a strong promise to the high usability and the world-class standard of this book. Overall, this is a great book for beginners to have a quick jump-start into writing the first wireless Java application. It is also a handy reference text for professional programmers. I highly recommend this book to all those developers who want to build the next-generation wireless applications using J2ME.
